F1 Styrian Grand Prix LIVE: Verstappen on POLE, Hamilton in second, Norris fourth at Red Bull Ring

Lewis Hamilton fears his Mercedes is too slow to overhaul repeat pole-winner Max Verstappen in today’s Styrian GP in Austria.

Red Bull’s title leader Verstappen was 0.194 seconds faster than Valtteri Bottas – but world champ Hamilton was promoted to second as his team-mate was given a three-place penalty for a bizarre pit-lane spin.

But Hamilton is worried by Verstappen’s superior Honda engine as Red Bull seek their fourth straight win.

The Brit said: “They [Red Bull] generally have a quarter of a second [a lap] on us all weekend.

“I don’t think we are going to have the raw pace to overtake them… maybe we will be surprised. Maybe it’ll rain.”

Meanwhile, Verstappen is sick of facing questions about his pace, insisting he will take pictures to show how less downforce equals more speed.

He said: “I think next time, I am going to bring a print-out of the rear wing difference we’re running, and then I’m going to hand it over to every single journalist.

“We are really quick in the straight… But look at our rear wing. I don’t think it’s exactly the same.

“It’s all about reliability improvements, and no clear advantage on pure power.”

Lando Norris was upgraded to third in his MaLaren,  ahead of Red Bull driver Sergio Perez and Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly.

But Bottas believes his grid penalty was too extreme and was only dished out as rivals complained.

He said: “It is a shame…It means I start fifth. My personal view is that it was quite harsh.

“But when other teams see it, they complain and everyone is always trying to screw you over in this sport.”
